Pinhole Photography
Annotating an image
In class we were were asked to work in pairs to make notes about this image using the following questions:

My Notes
In the photograph, there is a tall, transparent man pointing towards the right. He is standing inside a drys cleaner room, there are some washing machines behind the man. Te picture is in a circle and the sides are black.
In the background, I can see lots of washing machines and the colour is grey.
The image is circular, because the photographer is trying to make the image original since not all images are circular (most of them are a square). The photograph can also be took inside a washing machine.
The marks on the surface of the image are probably rain drops hitting the glass.
The image is darker around the edges, because the photographer probably edited the image to make it look more interesting and original.
The figure is partly transparent, because it helps you see the background more. The figure could also be a ghost.
I think the photographer made this picture by taking the picture with a camera and editing it with a computer software editor.
If I could speak to the photographer, I would ask 3 important questions. Those are, Why is the picture in black and white? What inspired you to take this photograph? Why is the picture circular?
The title that I would give this photo is Working Washing, because there are lots of washing machines in the background which means it could be washing something if the place is a drys cleaner. The title could represent that the washing machines are working, because there are marks on the glass.

Steven Pippin Research
Steven Pippin was an English artist that was born in the 1960's. Steven Pippin really liked working with pinhole cameras, during his early days he liked to convert old furnitures and everyday objects into original pinhole cameras. He takes lots of photographs with the pinhole cameras he made and most of the pictures were very successful. On the right are some images that Steven Pippin made with his pinhole camera. |
Recipe for making a Pinhole Camera
Ingredients:
- 1 Container
- 1 Knife
- Duct tape
- Very thin, sharp pin
- Black paint and brush
- Tinfoil or drink can
- Pair of scissors (optional)
1. Paint your container with the black paint.
2. Cut a rectangular hole in the middle of your container (around 2cm square)
3. Cut a small piece of tin foil and smooth it out. Use a small pin and create a small hole in the middle of the tinfoil.
4. Stick the tinfoil in the middle of your container (where you made a hole).
5. Make a shutter flap out of tape and stick it on your tinfoil.
6. Cut a piece of photographic paper in the dark room that fits the inside if your container.
7. Take the camera outside and place open your shutter, place the camera on a flat surface and leave it for around 1-3 minutes.
8. Remove the paper in the dark room and place it in the following 3 chemicals, Developer (1 minute), Stop (few seconds), Fix (around 5 minutes).
9. Wash the print and then hang it to dry.
I made a Pinhole Camera with a galaxy hot chocolate container. I followed the steps above however I had to stick duct tape everywhere at the front because it was plastic. My camera taller than most other people's. The picture that I made didn't go well (the last time I saw it in the stop chemical - it was completely black).

Examples of Pinhole pictures:
I like the contrast between the dark and light colours, there are more darker colours and they show the buildings well which makes this picture quite good. This picture would be better if the light drops on the top left and right were removed because it makes the picture look weird - the drops look like rain drops.
This pinhole image didn't go so well. It looks really blurry and that can be because the camera was probably moved during the time that the picture was took. A positive fact about this is that you can kinda see the buildings, however it's really light, there are more light parts in this picture than the dark part which covered part of the buildings. On the left, it looks like there is a roller coaster. If there were more dark parts in this image then it would go pretty good as you can see more of the background.
